What to Expect at Your First Pole Fitness Class in Las Vegas

You're curious. Maybe a little nervous. You've probably Googled it twice, closed the tab, and thought about it again. Sound familiar? Here's everything you need to know before you walk through the door at Shine.

Pole fitness is one of those things that looks intimidating from the outside and feels completely different once you're actually in the room. Students who book their first class at Shine Alternative Fitness almost universally say the same thing after: "I didn't expect to laugh that much" and "Why did I wait so long?"

If you're on the fence, this is your sign. Here's an honest, complete guide to what your first pole fitness class in Las Vegas will actually look like.

First: Let's Clear Up Some Misconceptions

Pole fitness has a reputation that doesn't always match reality. Yes, it shares some DNA with pole dancing. But in a fitness context, it's an athletic discipline — one that builds serious upper body strength, core stability, coordination, and flexibility. Think of it the way you'd think of gymnastics or rock climbing: demanding, skill-based, and deeply rewarding.

At Shine Alternative Fitness, our pole fitness classes are welcoming to everyone — all genders, all ages, all fitness backgrounds. There's no judgment in our studio. There's just good instruction, small class sizes, and a lot of people surprising themselves.

What Happens in the Intro to Pole Fitness Class

Our Intro to Pole Fitness class is specifically designed for people with zero experience. Here's what the flow typically looks like:

Warm-Up (about 10 minutes)

Class begins with a full-body warm-up to get your muscles ready and your grip primed. This usually includes some light cardio, shoulder and wrist mobility work, and core activation. Your wrists and hands are going to do a lot of work — we make sure they're prepared.

Grip and Pole Basics

Before you start spinning, you'll learn how to grip the pole correctly. This sounds basic, but it's everything. Proper grip protects your hands and wrists, makes moves easier to execute, and sets the foundation for everything you'll learn going forward. Your instructor will walk you through the main grip types and let you practice until they feel natural.

Basic Positions and Your First Spins

From there, you'll move into foundational positions — how to stand at the pole, how to walk around it with control, and how to execute your first basic spin. That first spin where you actually leave the ground and travel around the pole? Students almost always grin when it happens. It's a small moment, but it feels like a milestone.

Core and Conditioning Work

Woven through the class are exercises that build the specific strength pole fitness requires: core holds, pulling movements, and grip endurance. You'll feel muscles you didn't know you had — in the best way.

Cool Down and Q&A

Class ends with a cool down and plenty of time to ask questions. First-timers always have them, and our instructors are happy to talk through next steps, what classes to take next, and any moves you want to try.

"I came in thinking I'd try it once for fun. That was six months ago. I'm now in Level 2 and I've never felt stronger in my life." — Shine student

What to Wear

This is important: skin contact is essential for pole grip. The pole grips your skin, not fabric — so the more skin you have exposed on your legs and arms, the easier it is to hold on and execute moves.

• Wear shorts (the shorter the better for leg grip)

• A fitted tank top or short-sleeve shirt works well

• Do NOT apply lotion, body oil, or self-tanner on the day of class — it makes the pole slippery

• Remove all jewelry, socks, and shoes before class

If wearing shorts feels uncomfortable at first, that's completely normal. Most students get over it within the first five minutes once they realize it's purely functional.

What If I Have No Upper Body Strength?

Good news: you don't need any. Introductory pole fitness is designed for people starting from zero. The strength comes with the training — and it comes faster than you'd expect. Within a few weeks of consistent classes, students notice real changes in their arms, shoulders, and core.

The moves taught in the intro class are chosen specifically because they're achievable at all fitness levels. You will not be asked to do anything your body isn't ready for.

What About the Price?

First-time clients at Shine can take any intro or general class for just $10. It's our way of letting you try the studio — and the sport — before committing to a package or membership. From there, class packages and memberships are available for students who want to keep going (and most do).

Pole Fitness for Groups: Bachelorette Parties, Birthdays & Team Building

Pole fitness is also one of our most popular group experiences. If you've got a bachelorette party, birthday, or corporate team-building event coming up, a private pole fitness class at Shine is one of the most memorable, laugh-filled, genuinely empowering activities available in Las Vegas. Private bookings can be arranged for groups of any size and experience level.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is pole fitness appropriate for all body types?

Yes. Pole fitness is for every body. Students of all sizes, shapes, and ages train at Shine. Our instructors are skilled at working with every individual's strengths and helping everyone progress at their own pace.

How often should I come to class as a beginner?

Once a week is a great starting point. Twice a week accelerates your progress significantly. Your hands and grip strength need a little time to adapt at first, so rest days matter, especially early on.

Can men take pole fitness classes at Shine?

Absolutely. Men are welcome in all of our pole fitness classes and bring a lot of natural upper body strength that makes certain moves come quickly. Pole fitness is a sport with no gender — all are welcome.

What if I get nervous in class?

Tell your instructor. Seriously. Our instructors are trained to work with nervous first-timers, and they're very good at it. The environment at Shine is warm, supportive, and completely non-competitive. Everyone in the room was a beginner once.
